REEL 49 · COMMAND CODE

The coding agent built for cheap models.

Command Code is a terminal coding agent made by Ahmad Awais, from Multan. He built it for open models on purpose, so the people who cannot pay 200 dollars a month still get a real agent.

This is the setup, start to finish. Every command here was checked against the official docs and the live package on 22 September 2026.

install it now
# needs Node 22 or newer
npm i -g command-code@latest
WHO

The man who made it.

Ahmad Awais

Ahmad Awais. Born and raised in Multan. Thirteen electrical engineers from UET Lahore came before him in his own family, so he studied electrical engineering, finished the degree, and walked away from it to write software.

In 2020 he built a COVID tracker that ran in your terminal. It went everywhere. Sam Altman messaged him about it, and OpenAI offered him a VP job. He said no, because at the time they were a non profit and he could not see the point of the stock.

300+ open source packages 2,343,440 VS Code theme installs WordPress core contributor Google Developers Advisory Board Linux Foundation board Microsoft MVP GitHub Stars, Gold Award
The numbers above are the ones I could verify myself against live APIs. The install count is from the VS Code Marketplace, the package count is his own figure from the Thought Behind Things podcast.
SETUP

The setup, four steps.

You need Node 22 or newer. Check with node -v before you start.

1
Install it

One global install. The command it gives you is cmd.

terminal
npm i -g command-code@latest
check it worked
cmd --version
Version 1.62.1 at the time of writing. The package also installs under the names cmdc, commandcode and command-code if cmd clashes with something you already have.
2
Log in

This opens your browser. You can also paste an API key instead.

terminal
cmd login
Your login is stored at ~/.commandcode/auth.json.
3
Start it in a project

Go into a real project folder, not an empty one. It reads your code to learn how you write.

terminal
cd your-project
cmd
On the first run it asks whether to trust the folder. Say yes. Inside a session, type / for the command menu, ! to run a bash command, and @ to point at a file.
4
Pick a cheap model

This is the part the reel is about. List the models, then pick an open one.

see everything available
cmd --list-models
start on an open model
cmd --model kimi-k2.5
The open weight models are grouped under one Open Source heading in that list: DeepSeek, Qwen, GLM, Kimi, MiniMax and others. Inside a session you can switch any time with the /model slash command.
Why this matters. Most agents are tuned for the expensive frontier models. This one is built for the open ones, which is how the cost drops. That was the whole point of building it.
TASTE

The thing that makes it different.

Every other agent forgets. You correct the same mistake on Monday and again on Friday. Command Code turns your accepts, rejects and edits into a profile it keeps, so it stops making that mistake.

Your taste lives in a file you can read, in your own project.

where it keeps what it learned
.commandcode/taste/taste.md
share it with your team
npx taste push
npx taste pull
One person tunes it, the whole team pulls the same taste. The model behind this is called taste-1.
COST

What it costs.

Published pricing on 22 September 2026. Check the live page before you pay, plans move.

There are bigger plans above these (Pro at 20, Max at 100 and 200) and a Teams plan. The full table is on their pricing page.
HONEST

Two honest things.

It is new. The company pivoted from Langbase to Command Code in mid 2026. It ships fast, which means it also breaks sometimes. If something is broken, /feedback inside a session reports it.

The ranking moves. In July 2026 Awais posted a screenshot of OpenRouter showing Command Code second in Top Coding Agents and first in the Trending tile. Rankings change week to week, so check the live page rather than trusting a number from a video, including mine.

If you have been priced out of good tools, that is not a you problem.

He built this for the four hundred million people who are going to be writing code and will never afford two hundred dollars a month. His words, not mine.

Keep going

Who made this

Hi, I'm Rahman.

I've been building things people pay for since I was 10. Online game servers first, then $250K+ earned in tech. Now I build with AI in public, and every free thing from my reels lands on a page like this.
